Winner of seven Tony Awards, A Little Night Music has inspired decades of theatre-lovers with its masterful music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story), an unforgettable book by Hugh Wheeler (Sweeney Todd), and its iconic number, “Send in the Clowns.” It traces the plotting, flirting, and foibles of three affluent couples in circa-1900 Sweden. Follow along as lovers waltz in and out of each other’s lives and arms during a weekend romp in the country in this lighthearted, airy production from DCPA Theatre Company.

Shostakovich
Symphony No. 5

Sunday, October 15, 2023 – 1pm

Boettcher Concert Hall

The lives and music of Dimitri Shostakovich and Aram Khachaturian were unquestionably influenced by their shared sociopolitical climate as composers in the Soviet Union. Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, which he called “a response to my critics,” sprang forth during a time of tremendous oppression and conflict, leaving listeners to wonder whether the composition was a triumphant work of patriotism or a hidden note of subversion against the oppression of Stalin.

Serbian violinist Nemanja Radulović has taken the classical music world by storm with his extraordinary virtuosity, which will be on full display as featured soloist on Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto, an exhilarating work full of Armenian folk flourishes and a hypnotically beautiful second movement. It’s all led by orchestra favorite Jaime Martín, on loan from his post as Music Director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.
